High-Profile Leaders Join Mentor Walk at Agnes Scott College

Sen. Johnny Isakson, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, U.S. Representative Hank Johnson, House Minority Leader Rep. Stacey Abrams, House Minority Leader Rep. Stacey Abrams, State Rep. Jason Carter, DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis, Ambassador Andrew Young, Mrs. Carolyn Young to Participate

ATLANTA (August 16, 2011) — The inaugural Carolyn Young Mentor Walk will be held at Agnes Scott College on Sept. 10. A distinguished group of local leaders will take part, including Mrs. Carolyn Young, Ambassador Andrew Young, U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, U.S. Representative Hank Johnson, Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle, House Minority Leader Rep. Stacey Abrams, State Rep. Jason Carter, DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis, and Agnes Scott College President Elizabeth Kiss.

The Mentor Walk is designed to have college students, who will serve as role models, walk with their younger peers, parents, guardians, and the rest of the community on campus to inspire the kids to finish school and attend university. This “near peer” experience will raise awareness for the importance of mentors, celebrate mentoring programs, and emphasize the importance of exercise and healthy living. It will also provide mentors from different groups an opportunity to meet one another and share their experiences, stories, and tips.

The walk is named after Carolyn Young, who has taught in Atlanta Public Schools and has been recognized with several awards and honors for her outstanding teaching career.

The 1.5 mile walk around the campus of Agnes Scott is open to the community and will begin promptly at 8AM. Participants should arrive an hour early to check-in. There will be a health expo and games for students during registration. Fun after-walk festivities, including lunch, t-shirts, vendors, speakers, and entertainment, will last from 11AM-1PM.

Mentoring is a youth development strategy and has a positive influence on behavior. Mentors encourage kids to stay in school and further their education by engaging them in a fun “near peer” experiences. This experience is paired with an emphasis on walking and exercising for healthy living.
